Digi Youth Arts (DYA) presents Coast To Coast. Tune in to see this online creative coastal exchange showcasing music, spoken word and visual arts works of young Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander artists connected to the so-called Sunshine + Gold Coasts.

This event is an opportunity for Indigenous young people to bring Coastal connections, that have always existed, into a new creative context.

This program is a part of remake-regenerate-reclaim and has been supported by the Australian Governments Indigenous Languages and Arts program.

FEATURED ARTISTS

Kane Brunjes
Kane Brunjes is a Gunggari, Kabi Kabi man practicing in both public and gallery realms. Through his art practice Brunjes aims to solidify and represent a visual portrayal of how he views and reacts to the environment surrounding him with consideration to history and story. Now working exclusively with Birrunga Gallery he continues to develop these core foundations with a guided lens of expertise.

Brunjes is the inaugural participant in Birrunga Gallery’s 3 year Cultural Creative Residential program.

Andrew Coleman
Andrew Coleman is a Bundjalung-Githabul artist from the Somerset Region, South-West of Brisbane. His earliest musical influences can be traced to long family road trips with the three Johns (Cash, Denver, and Horton); later finding a deep love for Blues and Rock & Roll.

When he’s not exploring his second home of Greenville, South Carolina, he is performing around the Southeast, delivering electrifying performances and hair-raising stage tricks with his trusted three-piece rock band ‘Caravan’.

Emily Coleman
Emily Coleman is an emerging multidisciplinary creative artist and a fiercely proud Bundjalung Githabul woman from a long line of strong storytelling women. As a thank you, to everyone that came before- her work has and will always focus on the magic in Indigenous Storytelling.

Emily has worked in the arts for over a decade in a huge variety of roles, from stage performer & touring 'arts in education' actor, to Community Engagement & Creative Producer - but her most recent and biggest achievement was being appointed as the Acting Associate Artistic Director of Digi Youth Arts.

Cormac Finn
Cormac Finn is a proud Kabi Kabi man and musician. He is involved with Digi Youth Arts (DYA) as a Youth Artist and Youth Board Member. He has been involved in several DYA events, most recently as an active band member of ‘The Ancient Bloods’, who recently recorded an album as part of the where we stand project. Cormac also recently worked on the sound installation component of a large scale artwork presented at Woodford Folk Festival.

Eleea
Award winning singer-songwriter and avid solo traveller, ELEEA, is releasing new single ‘Space’ from ‘The Travel Collection’ of songs - an anthology influenced by her independent backpacking trips to 35+ countries. ELEEA’s rich vocals and mature songwriting has seen her perform throughout Australia and internationally, captivating live audiences and taking them along on her journey. ELEEA’s life, music and performances are anything but dull and will leave you feeling inspired to be fearless, independent and chase adventure.

Loki Liddle
Loki is a Jabirr Jabirr man based on the Gold Coast. His practise includes performing in his band Selve, performance poetry, playing as a member of The Ancient Bloods and producing for DYA. Loki loves being a part of DYA. For him it is a rewarding process of connecting with other young Indigenous artists and arts workers. It has helped him to create a more culturally informed practise across all of his own artforms and his DYA work. Through his role at DYA Loki has had the opportunity to help deliver and be involved in many exciting projects, from NAIDOC week through to Woodford Folk Festival. As an artist Loki aims to tell stories, clothing ancient themes with a contemporary voice. He can often be mischievous in the way he goes about this playful mission, usually to be seen with his nose buried in a pile of mounting journals while his pen scribbles like an inky snake into the heart of the matter, or disturbing his house-mates by conjuring strange songs at irregular times of night. Whatever it is, you can trust that he is enjoying himself.

Nadia Morrison
Nadia Morrison is a bluesy, political, storyteller who portrays strong messages through her music. Nadia’s inspiration comes from Hip Hop legends such as Tupac Shakur and Lauryn Hill to jazz household names such as the iconic Amy Winehouse. She is a singer in the second iteration of DYA’s ‘The Ancient Bloods’. The past year has been so exciting for her musically; performing at QPAC several times as well as the Tivoli and Yonder festival to name a few. Nadia also got to contribute to iconic Australian artist Mojo Juju’s musical journey singing back up vocals for her Native Tongue tour Brisbane show.

Jain Rhys
Reece Bowden is a multi-instrumental musician and self-produced artist from the Gold Coast. He is part of the Anaiwan tribe and is in a process of discovery surrounding what that means to his artistic process. He is a core member of Gold Coast band ‘Selve’ and is also currently working on material for his first full-length release under moniker Jain Rhys.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

DIIMPA
Eclectic and esoteric, Diimpa is an avant composer, soundscape weaver and sonic wizard. He is a proud mixed Kabi Kabi autistic queer man who works with keyboard instruments to create worlds of effortless magic and sound journey. Filled with electric pulses or ambient textures, Diimpa’s unique brand of contemporary minimalism is, at its heart, transcendent.

ELISAPIE
Ambassador for Inuit culture, Elisapie represents the wild and rough beauty of the Canadian North. Her new album, The Ballad of the Runaway Girl, is the musical tale of an expatriate Inuk. On June 19th, 2020, Elisapie returned with a new single called Asuguuq. This song is a gift to Inuit communities in the wake of National Indigenous Peoples Day.

KATINA OLSEN
Katina is a proud Wakka Wakka Kombumerri choreographer and also has Norwegian, German and English Ancestry. Katina’s choreographic interests interrogate her Indigenous cultural dance and story through various forms including theatre, moving sculpture, film and installation.

THE MERINDAS
The Merindas are the collective force of Ballardong Whadjuk and Nyoongar woman Kristel Kickett (from Tammin, WA) and Candice Lorrae of Jawoyn and Thursday Island heritage (born in Darwin, NT). Based in Melbourne, these soul sisters are trail-blazing their innovative style of Indigenous music. They describe their unique sound as “electronic pop with a dance-hall feel, alongside hip hop and R&B influences."

PAULA DELANEY NAZARSKI
Paula Delaney Nazarski is a Ngugi Woman from North Stradbroke Island. She is an esteemed actor and writer who frequently works with Queensland Theatre Company. She has written, performed and toured in theatre shows all around Queensland. Paula is passionate about the arts and the role of storytelling in the contemporary world

Transience, created by artists Glen Manning and Kathy Daly, is a short-film of their signature etchings on the sand of our spectacular Sunshine Coast Beaches, exploring our connection with the marine and coastal landscapes through the synergy of art and movement.

Thematically, the work is a response to both Covid-19 and climate change; the virus resulting in wide-spread community focus on microscopic organisms, and an acknowledgement that we are experiencing a rapid period of global climate change.

Massive ephemeral drawings of microscopic phytoplankton will be inscribed on the sand by artists Glen and Kathy and augmented by a solo performer, Reina Takeuchi, allowing the viewer to enter an unseen world of interconnected ecosystems.

Captured by local filmmakers and storytellers, Pluggas, this beautiful short film will showcase this ephemeral, multidisciplinary artwork, allowing us to see the sand inscriptions unfold and then be swept away by the incoming tides at First Bay in Coolum.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Glen Manning and Kathy Daly are a collaborative and creative partnership seeking to extend the imaginative scope and significance of art in public spaces. Their art practice explores the way we intersect with and interact with the natural landscape and the way art is integral to the creation of meaningful spaces.

Reina Takeuchi is an Australian-Japanese artist-researcher interested in interdisciplinary collaboration and facilitating embodied experiences of contemporary art.

Fisch Rasy is a local professional storyteller and filmmaker with experience as a director, producer, and director of photography. His work with his company, Pluggas, has been internationally recognised in film festivals and across multiple social media platforms. Fisch along with the Pluggas team are committed to continuing to build the screen industry on the Sunshine Coast.

Projection artist James Muller presents Trace, a short-film featuring James’ signature large-scale projections onto the ocean at Mooloolaba Beach.

The video will contain an accompanying soundscape by renowned local musician Shannon Sol Carrol, delivering a multi-sensory experience of Mooloolaba Beach as you’ve never seen before.

Trace invites us to consider our connections to the places we frequent and asks us what has changed during our recent experiences with Covid-19 and isolation? This stunning work celebrates complexity, mixed messages and contradiction, encompassing connection and disconnection.

James and Shannon have been collaborating on various projects for over 15 years and their works continue to reflect a deep respect and creative articulation of the Sunshine Coast environment and lifestyle.

James Muller from Earth Base Productions utilises screen technologies and emerging digital media to create projects with intrinsic cultural, environmental and creative values. His award winning projection installation works are often found in unexpected places and surfaces. James first explored the medium using analogue technologies. Earth Base Productions is a multi-disciplinary, creative media studio working across film, television and digital media industries for over twenty years.

Renowned Sunshine Coast musician Shannon Sol Carroll has a diverse discography of albums with his many and various bands, art projects and film sound tracks. A founding member of genre bending projects ‘Band of Frequencies‘ and ‘Afro Dizzi Act‘, Shannon brings an innovative approach to his solo performances utilizing live looping and an array of effects pedals to create ambient soundscapes and deep grooves that reflect his coastal roots.

Join us as we REWIND to Horizon Festival 2018 for Dawn Awakening.

Dawn Awakening is a special First Nation-focused event that has won a place in the hearts and minds of the Sunshine Coast community.

On the final day of Horizon Festival, our community gathers before dawn at Stumers Creek, Coolum Beach to witness a beautiful multi-arts celebration of remembrance, dreaming and ritual.

Our 2018 Dawn Awakening was an ode to the Glossy Black Cockatoo; its spirit of collective strength honoured through music, dance and spoken word alongside stunning visual art installations and projections.

The 2018 performance was produced by Angie Dunbavan of Red Chair and featured an incredible line-up of artists including Lyndon Davis and Gubbi Gubbi Dance, multi-award winning singer/songwriter Shellie Morris, traditional Yolngu song-man Djakapurra Munyarryun, vocalist Kacey Patrick, dancer Soraya Fewquandie Scott, guitarists Robbie James and Andrew Veivers, cellist Louise King, Cool Harmonies, Coolum State School choirs and projection artist James Muller.

Join featured artist Lyndon Davis to reminisce on this beautiful performance with stories, insights and never-before seen footage from the event.

Wrapping up the series for 2020 is popular Australian Indie-Folk duo, The Dreggs, recorded on a moody day at the spectacular Point Cartwright and streamed into your living room.

Musicians Paddy Macrae and Zane Harris grew up on the Sunshine Coast with the ocean by their feet, so it’s only fitting they share with us their coastal vibes and Indie-Folk / Roots tunes in celebration of our beaches and coastline.

Drive on in for this remarkable outdoor concert experience, starring the new wave of exciting young rockers from the Sunny Coast!

In its 5th year, The Eumundi School of Rock is excited to present this electrifying drive-in concert, jam packed with performances from their 23 young rockers from the class of 2020, the 2019 show band and the Imperial Superband! The students will also be joined by the Mega Teacher band with five-time ARIA Award winning local songstress Katie Noonan alongside wonderful songsmith Jack Carty.

This year The Eumundi School of Rock offered 23 10-week scholarships to young rockers aged grade three to eight, and six 10-week scholarships for the Imperial Superband rockers aged 13-17.

This concert will be the culmination of all their hard work and a chance to discover the stars of tomorrow from the comfort of your own car!

IMPORTANT INFO

Entry is for standard cars only (max 5 seats) – no large trucks /buses / minivans etc.
Parking is first in best dressed and parking attendants will assist you to drive in and select your own car spot.
The performance sound comes through your car or portable FM radio – 105.5FM.
Eat, drink and relax in your own car. We will have plenty of food and drinks available for purchase and encourage you to buy from us and help us to fundraise and support the school.

LET’S BE COVID-SAFE

It’s great that we can gather again, but we have some ground rules to make sure we are all kept safe and well:

People must not attend the event if they have COVID-19 symptoms.
Only members from the same household are allowed to be in each car (max 5 people per car)
People should remain in their vehicles, except to use the bathroom or purchase food/drinks.
Social distancing should be observed in common areas and shared facilities.

ABOUT EUMUNDI SCHOOL OF ROCK

Eumundi School of Rock is an audition based 10 week music mentoring and tuition scholarship program for Sunshine Coast based students from grades three to eight, that includes a live end of year concert with full professional band production.

The ethos behind starting the school was to ignite a passion and love of music performance in the children who were already playing music by giving them mentoring, stage craft lessons and a live gig experience. They also have the opportunity to work together in bands with other students and experience creating high quality music together.

Next up in the series is a powerhouse duo; five-time ARIA award-winning artist Katie Noonan and supremely talented classical musician Louise King of Cello Dreaming.

This beautiful classic contemporary concert features both solo and duo performances from these two incredible artists, filmed against a lovely sunset at Chambers Island; a stunning celebration of our Sunshine Coast riverways.

Celebrating place, Open Air is a monthly concert series, streamed from the Sunshine Coast’s most spectacular locations, featuring some of the region’s most celebrated artists.

We’re kicking off the series with Yalanji Woman of Song, Deline Briscoe, who will delight us with her with her signature vocal style from the breathtaking Glass House Mountains.

Deline interweaves Wulngkabadi (Yalanji traditional singing) with jazz, hip-hop and soul, with a powerful vocal delivery that can change hearts and minds.

Deline will be joined by Uncle Noel and Aunty Helena, who will officially welcome us to Jinibara and Kabi Kabi country; the lands where Horizon Festival events now stand.

A Galaxy of Suns

Join us as we REWIND to this incredibly special performance held at Bankfoot House against a backdrop of Mt Tibrogargan in Horizon Festival 2019.

A Galaxy of Suns is a spectacular 36-part choir performance that ‘sings’ the stars as they rise and set over the 360˚ of our horizon. Tracking the Earth’s motions through space, the work documents in real-time the audience’s precise position in relation to the stars, sonifying stellar data in a unique celebration of the majesty and beauty of the cosmos.

Featuring award winning local choir, Oriana Choir, A Galaxy of Suns uses GPS data with parameters such as location on the horizon, brightness, size, age and chemical composition of stars, and translates them into sonic and aesthetic variables including rhythm, pitch, volume, panning, colour and light intensity.

Join lead artist Michaela Gleave on this four-minute recap of the performance as she explains how the work transverses contemporary art, music, astronomy and design. We also feature an audio recording of the post-show artist talk and information about the app so that you can experience A Galaxy of Suns in your own backyard!
